Interview with Ilan Elkaim (IMHI 2008), Chief Executive Officer Cidade Matarazzo, Brazil
AAIMHI: How did you end up working in Hospitality?
I started my studies in business administration but soon realized that my true passion lay in the hospitality industry. I saw an enormous untapped potential in the sector in my home country, Brazil, with its beautiful beaches, breathtaking landscapes and rich culture. However, I noticed a lack of innovation and development in the sector compared to other international destinations. I decided to switch my studies to hotel management in order to acquire operational know-how. I chose to pursue my bachelor’s degree in France, known for its strong hospitality tradition, world-class hotels and excellent gastronomy, where I wanted to learn from the best and immerse myself in the culture. After graduation, it was natural to go on and pursue an MBA at IMHI-ESSEC to supplement my operational expertise with more in-depth knowledge in real estate, finance, and management, some of the essential skills to reach the next level of my career.
AAIMHI: Tell us about your journey after IMHI?
Following my studies at IMHI-ESSEC, I began working in the development & acquisitions department of international hotel operators, such as Accor and Starwood Hotels. I initially covered Europe, Middle East and Africa where I took part of new development deals, portfolio acquisitions and contract renegotiations. In 2015 I was offered the chance to lead the development efforts of Starwood Hotels in Brazil. Despite being a difficult market, Brazil offered some great opportunities and we managed to sign different deals there such as a Sheraton in Santos and one in Rio. I was also part of the task force that negotiated a historic agreement in Cuba, making Starwood Hotels the first American company to strike a deal in the country since the 1959 revolution. In 2017, following the Marriott acquisition of Starwood Hotels, I moved to the investment side joining CTF Development as their Investor Representative in the Cidade Matarazzo project. The Cidade Matarazzo project is the largest heritage renovation scheme in the Southern Hemisphere. Spanning 150 thousand sqm, this mixed-use project includes the 150-key Rosewood Sao Paulo, conference and cultural centers, offices and retail space between other features. The project has been designed by world-renowned architects such as Philip Starck, Rudy Riccioti, and Jean Nouvel, it is the largest private investment in a heritage complex ever developed in South America. In 2022, I was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Cidade Matarazzo where I am responsible for leading the overall management and direction of the organization. This includes setting and implementing goals, making key decisions, managing the relationships with stakeholders, and ensuring the company's overall success. I am also tasked with building and leading a strong, motivated team, fostering a positive corporate culture, and driving growth and profitability. I am looking forward to leading Cidade Matarazzo to greater heights of success.
AAIMHI: What lesson did you take from your experience at IMHI?
One of the biggest lessons I took away from my experience at IMHI-ESSEC was the importance of embracing new challenges. Throughout the program, I was constantly pushed out of my comfort zone and faced with tasks and projects that were difficult and unfamiliar to me. At first, it seemed quite overwhelming, but with the support and guidance of my instructors and peers, I learned to approach them with a positive attitude and open mind. And as I worked through these challenges, I discovered that I was capable of much more than I had ever thought possible. The experience not only helped me develop new skills and gain confidence, but it also taught me the value of taking risks and stepping outside of my comfort zone. Overall, embracing challenges was a key takeaway from IMHI-ESSEC, and it's a lesson that I will carry with me throughout my career.
AAIMHI: What would be your recommendations to the new students joining the program?
As a new student at IMHI-ESSEC, it's important to be prepared for the hard work and long hours that the program will demand. Networking is also key, take advantage of the opportunity to connect with fellow students, professors, and industry professionals. Be open-minded and willing to learn new perspectives and ideas. Utilize the extra-curricular activities and resources that are available to you such as clubs, career services and internships. Actively engage in class discussions and volunteer for leadership roles. Remember to stay self-motivated, set clear goals and focus on achieving them. Lastly, remember to have fun! Going to IMHI-ESSEC is a big commitment and by following these recommendations, you'll be able to make the most of your experience.
