ESSEC Alumni in Algeria: “Our country is undergoing a major economic transformation”
Amine Hamdad (M13), President of the ESSEC Alumni Algeria Chapter, tells us about our local community – and the activities he and his fellow volunteers offer to them. If you are a graduate or a student in the area, join their online group!
ESSEC Alumni: What is your personal history with Algeria?
Amine Hamdad: I have lived in Algeria for most of my life. I was born and raised in Tizi Ouzou, where I also attended university. During my youth, I represented Algeria as a swimmer for the national team. Later, I moved to Algiers, where I started my career in advertising with BBDO, a role that had been a dream for me. I then transitioned into the airline industry, working with Qatar Airways, before pursuing further education at ESSEC. Afterwards, it felt natural to return to my homeland, first joining Renault for a few years, and then founding my own PR agency that I have been managing ever since.
EA: What are the profiles and backgrounds of our alumni in Algeria?
A. Hamdad: Everyone is based in Algiers. Half of our group is composed either by elder graduates who went to ESSEC in the 70s, or by younger ones who came back to Algeria to launch their business, join the family business or join a French multinational company. The rest is expats. Most of them only stay for a few years. A few fall in love with our country and end up staying here with their families. Even fewer are here for VIEs or VIAs at the French Embassy.
EA: What opportunities do our alumni have in Algeria?
A. Hamdad: Algeria is undergoing a major economic transformation, shifting from an import-heavy model to encouraging local production. This shift, combined with Algeria’s energy advantages and cost-effective labor market, creates significant potential in manufacturing, industry, and services. Additionally, with a growing focus on digital transformation and innovation, there are increasing opportunities for skilled professionals in tech, finance, and consulting.
EA: Economics aside, what makes Algeria special in your eyes?
A. Hamdad: Algeria is a country with a rich cultural and historical heritage, deeply influenced by Berber, Arab and Ottoman. Politically, it is a stable country with a strong state presence in economic activities. Socially, it is characterized by a strong sense of community and hospitality, where personal and family networks play a key role in both personal and professional life. The country has a vibrant youth population, which is increasingly interested in entrepreneurship and innovation. Culturally, Algeria boasts a dynamic arts scene, especially in music, literature, and cinema, and is known for its rich culinary traditions.
EA: What practical advice do you have for our alumni moving to Algeria?
A. Hamdad: Learn some French, which shouldn’t be a problem, or Arabic, as both languages are widely spoken and essential for daily interactions. Understand the local business culture, which places a strong emphasis on trust and relationships: building connections and networking are crucial for professional success. Be patient with administrative procedures; having local contacts can help navigate processes more efficiently. Last but not least, enjoy the lifestyle: Algeria offers an excellent quality of life with affordable living costs, a Mediterranean climate, and stunning landscapes, from coastal cities to the Sahara Desert.
EA: What are the offer and services the ESSEC Alumni Algeria Chapter?
Amine Hamdad: We are a brand new chapter, still in the process of developing our offer. Our ambition is to serve as a networking hub for alumni, helping them connect professionally and socially, and facilitating discussions on career opportunities, business trends, and economic developments in Algeria. We have been launching informal gatherings, from networking dinners to industry-focused discussions. We are also in touch with other Grandes Écoles alumni groups to explore joint events. In the near future, we are considering formal events with business leaders and workshops on business opportunities for young entrepreneurs and returning alumni. Another of our goals is to attract more Algerian students to ESSEC and provide guidance for those considering applying.
EA: Who are the members of your team?
A. Hamdad: I am grateful to have Mohamed Abdelli (M21) and Mourad Arab (EXEC MBA 22) by my side. Both are working to strengthen ties between the strong Algerian ESSEC community in France and our local network in Algeria, and reinforce connections across both sides of the Mediterranean.
EA: Do you need more volunteers to get involved?
Amine Hamdad: Of course, we welcome more volunteers to help us grow. Specifically, we are looking for alumni who can help organize and host networking events, establish connections with businesses and institutions to create professional opportunities for alumni, support mentorship initiatives for recent graduates and returning alumni, and promote ESSEC’s brand in Algeria and attract prospective students. Feel free to reach out!
